What lime does to your hair
Rough, dull hair or hair that feels "straw-like" is a common complaint in hard water areas. What do studies say?
What is documented
An electron microscope study published in 2017 in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology compared hair washed with hard water and distilled water: washing with hard water accumulated more magnesium in the fiber. That hard water leaves minerals in the hair is the clearest finding.
What is not so clear
On whether hard water weakens hair, studies do not agree. One from 2018 in the International Journal of Trichology found less resistance in hair treated with hard water, while another from 2013 in the same journal saw no differences. All are laboratory tests with cut hair, so they do not prove that hard water causes hair loss.
In summary
Hard water stays on the hair and scalp. If you notice your hair feeling rougher when you move to a new city, it's not your imagination.
